What’s Your Nude?

A fantastic project about bras is making its way across the internet. “What’s Your Nude?” is the collective challenge to bra manufactures everywhere into taking a closer look at what the color “nude” really means.

What do you think about nude bras? This is a question I’ve been asking in my interviews with women–and men!–about bras. If you search Twitter for the hashtag #whatsyournude, you’ll get some interesting responses. Similar to the issue of crayon and band-aid “flesh” colors, What’s Your Nude? is sparking conversation between all types of people. From people who have never thought of the psychological ramifications of accepting a single “normalized” nude color, to those who have always had the nude bra issue at the back of their minds, What’s Your Nude? seems to be hitting everyone’s nerves except for the target: bra manufacturers and retailers.

To help these bra giants shed their ignorance, What’s Your Nude? is launching a brown bra scavenger hunt. Check out the video above, as well as the Facebook page and Twitter for more information. There’s also a great interview by CBS that you can watch here.

bras across the bridge

A friend of mine posted about a bunch of bras strewn across the Hot Metal Bridge in Pittsburgh. Awesome!

Turns out Aerie and Bright Pink are behind this project, appropriately titled “Bras Across The Bridge.” The bras will stay on the bridge for a month before getting washed and donated to various women’s shelters.

Last Call For Bra Donations

Society never gave us a bra ritual, so we’re making our own! Throughout the week, I will be parading throughout the playa as a Bra Shaman, hosting do-it-yourself and on the spot bra rituals, ceremonies, and sacrifices.

I’m typing this as the washing machine spins methodically in the background, gently cycling through bras.

If you didn’t know already: I’ve been collecting bras from people I’ve interviewed, complete strangers, friends. I’m working on an L-TAB piece for Burning Man, which you can read more about at this post. My actual proposal is here.

Do you have any bras you no longer use? Let me know! If you’re in the Valley, I can swing by your house and pick up your donations. If not, feel free to send a bra via post–as long as it gets here by Friday!

Tumblr has a bunch of interesting gifs, pictures, rants, and challenges (like the above) regarding bras. I snagged a few screenshots of the good ones.

This last one even came with an extremely detailed list of things you can do to not piss off your bra sales associate.

bras as art (and stories!)

Up north I got a chance to interview the artist Emily Duffy, who has created art out of practically everything. From the mundane to the political, the entertaining to the engaging, she’s made sculptures, art cars, prints, and more. Hear what she has to say about one of her past artistic mediums: the bra.

One of the reasons I chose this particular segment to share with everyone is because of the stories that came out of the BraBall. Occasionally, someone will ask me “why” I’m making a documentary about bras, “why” I’m looking into bras, “why” I want to explore our relationships with bras. Emily answered these questions perfectly when she talks about the stories and unity that revealed itself with the making of the BraBall.

“No Bra” Day is July 9th

Someone decided this Saturday should be National No Bra Day. According to the Facebook event, more than 200,000 people are supporting this day, while 700,000 people aren’t sure, might, or definitely will not participate.

What about you? Do you plan on going braless tomorrow, or are you keeping everything strapped?

I visited the harbors west of here to catch up with Arturo and Melissa. These two interviews were fantastic for a few reasons; I got a chance to officially meet both of them, it was my first run interviewing two people back-to-back, and we get a bra story from a man for the first time

Arturo and I talked about history, society, his ideas about bras, and some of his memories regarding bras. Melissa and I talked a lot about fitness, the roles bras and breasts play in relation to exercise, and how breasts are the only part of the body that you can’t control regarding body toning and sculpting. In these clips, we hear Art recall one of the first times he encountered bras and breasts in an inexplicible, curious kid sort of way. We also listen to Melissa explain a bit about bra usage at the gym.
